Ways to Stay in Shape While Traveling for Work

Traveling for work can be a great way to see the world – but it can play havoc on your health and fitness levels. Without the comforts of your kitchen and a predictable schedule, it can be easy to fall into some pretty unhealthy habits. Luckily though, there are some things you can do to stay in shape while on the road.

Make water your friend

Keep plenty of bottled water on hand to ensure that you stay hydrated throughout the day. Many hotels offer bottled water to guests – so you should ensure that you stock up on enough to last throughout your trip. Drinking lots of water ensures that you feel fuller for longer and helps you to avoid snacking on unhealthy foods and sugary drinks. If you can’t find bottled water at your travel location, consider investing in a self-filtering bottle to ensure that the water you are drinking is safe.

Take advantage of the hotel gym

Many large chain hotels have a gym on site. As such, you should try to set aside some time in your schedule to do some exercise. Most hotel gyms are also open 24 hours, so you can exercise anytime you want. If your budget is a bit tight or you do not want to stay in a pricey hotel, ensure that the place you choose to stay at is in close proximity to a gym.

Walk as much as possible

Walking is a great way to burn calories while traveling from one meeting or appointment to the next. Instead of taking a taxi to that business meeting, invest in a good pair of sneakers and walk. Unless you are staying in an unsafe area or it is too late at night, most places offer plenty of opportunities for walking.

Online workouts

Most hotels offer free WIFI to guests. Take advantage of this to stream workouts from YouTube, so you can stay in shape while traveling for work. Most YouTube workouts range from 10 to 60 minutes and vary in intensity, so you can choose one that suits your fitness level.  YouTube workouts run the gamut from simple stretches to intensive, total body workouts so you always have something to choose from.

Watch what you eat

Travel destinations are renowned for offering delicious cuisine designed to tempt you to sample everything on the menu. This is great if you are on holiday and taking a break from watching calories. However, if you are traveling for work, you may need to lay off the deep dish pizza, boudin noir, prawn dumplings, tagine, or whatever is the favorite local fare at your travel destination. If you can, choose accommodation that allows you to prepare your own meals. If this is not possible, then try to limit your food choices to salads, lean protein and low carb options on the menu.

Traveling for work can sometimes be a little rough on your fitness levels. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. By following the advice outlined in this article, you can stay fit and healthy while on the road.
