Making Weight Loss Workouts a Habit

There’s a reason that we so frequently hear diet and exercise used in conjunction—they’re both crucial aspects of losing weight. Yet even with the knowledge that exercise is important, sticking to your workout plans can be a challenge. Though a weight loss program will teach you many ways to improve your health, forming new habits is rarely easy—daily exercise is something that many people struggle to make a reality.

Protein in Your Diet

Although not ideal for everyone, when attempting to lose weight, a diet high in protein foods gives your body the amino acids necessary for peak functioning of numerous physiological processes. In addition, you won't be driven to snack constantly by recurring hunger pangs after eating a meal rich in protein, because protein helps you feel fuller longer.

Portion Control Basics for Weight Management

portion control puzzle pieces

Increasing portion sizes is a common and effective marketing technique used by restaurants, vending machines, and food manufacturers to make consumers think they are "getting their money's worth". Unfortunately, placing heaping platefuls of food in front of us or tripling the size of what many of us consider a single-serving. As portions increase, our perception of what is a reasonable amount of food to consume for a snack or as a meal becomes inaccurate and we end up eating much more food than we thought we were.

Saxenda, a new weight loss drug, receives FDA approval today

pills

I am very excited that today the FDA approved a new weight loss drug. Saxenda works differently than the other weight loss medications. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 is a hormone released by our small intestines that tells our brains it is time to stop eating. It is one of the important ways that we know to stop eating. Naturally, it is released mostly in response to eating protein and fat, and the process happens about 20 minutes after eating.

I know after the New Year, I will see lots of new patients - January is always a busy month for me at CNC. There will be a common theme - "My resolution for the New Year is to lose weight!" I am so happy to work with these individuals and help them achieve their goals! However, unfortunately, all too often, the goal of "losing weight" will result in a quick regain for one of two reasons:

Achievable Goals Key to Your Weight Loss Success?

What is the key to success, whether it is losing weight, saving money or following a career path? It might just be as simple as just making goals that are within reach. Achievable goals will create a flow that keeps you moving in the right direction. If you set the bar too high, you fail over and over until you get discouraged and quit. With reachable goals, you create a sense of achievement that pushes forward. Consider some rules for finding success by using achievable goals.

This is an exciting year for weight loss medications! Hot on the heels of the FDA approval for Contrave, the FDA is expected to approve Saxenda, another novel weight loss drug soon. Saxenda (liraglutide) is an analog of GLP-1 (glucose-like peptide 1). GLP-1 is a hormone our small intestine makes in response to eating.
