FDA Approves “Oral Wegovy” (A Daily Pill for Weight Loss)

I. Introduction: A New Option for Denver Weight Loss

I am writing to share some exciting news for our patients in Greenwood Village, Denver, and across Colorado. On December 22, the FDA officially approved the first and only oral GLP-1 tablet specifically indicated for weight loss: Oral Wegovy (semaglutide tablets).

For years, many of you in the Denver Metro area have asked if there was an effective alternative to weekly injections. While we have used oral semaglutide (Rybelsus) for diabetes management in the past, this new approval is specifically for weight management. It involves higher dosing to achieve results similar to the injectable versions (Wegovy and Zepbound) that we prescribe at the Clinical Nutrition Center.

II. What Colorado Patients Need to Know

Here is what you need to know about this new option for medical weight loss in Colorado:

1. It is effective. The FDA approval was based on the OASIS 4 clinical trial. The results showed that adults taking the daily 25 mg tablet achieved an average weight loss of ~17% (if staying on treatment). This is a significant milestone, as it offers a magnitude of weight loss that rivals the injectable medications, but in a pill form. This aligns with our philosophy that treating obesity is about addressing biology, not willpower.

2. No needles required. This is obviously the biggest change. Oral Wegovy is a once-daily tablet. For our patients who travel frequently (perhaps for business in Lone Tree or Centennial), struggle with injections, or simply prefer a daily routine, this offers much greater flexibility.

3. Availability and Cost. Novo Nordisk has announced that the medication will be available in pharmacies starting in early January 2026. Notably, they have announced a self-pay price point of roughly $149 per month with savings offers for the starting dose.

  • The full dose will cost $299 / month, but only through NovoCare, which may exclude certain government insurance plans (our rep has assured us that patients with Medicare are able to get this reduced price).
  • We will know more about specific Colorado insurance coverage as the rollout begins next month.

III. How does Oral Semaglutide work?

Just like the injection, this medication works by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and “food noise”.

However, taking the pill requires a specific routine to ensure it is absorbed by your body. Similar to other oral semaglutide products, it must be taken:

  • On an empty stomach (upon waking).
  • With a sip of water (no more than 4 ounces).
  • You must wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medications.

IV. Is this right for you?

The side effect profile is very similar to the injectable version (primarily nausea or gastrointestinal changes as your body adjusts).

If you are currently doing well on your injectable medication (Wegovy or Zepbound), there is no urgent need to switch. However, if you have been waiting for an oral option, or if you are looking to transition off of injections, this is a fantastic new tool in our toolbox.

V. Next Steps: Consult a Weight Loss Doctor
